A Mobile Exhibition Space

Completed at
Design Incubation Centre
The Travelling Straits Saloon is a mobile exhibition space modelled after key elements and furniture found in the Reception Hall of the NUS Baba House. It provides an immersive setting and dedicated space for the display of artefacts from the Travelling Museum Box; a collection of everyday artefacts drawn from the daily lives and activities of a Peranakan Chinese family.
It aims to enhance public engagement, foster dialogue, and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the institution. Through its adaptable design and interactive elements, the system serves as a dynamic platform for heritage education and exploration. Student presentations usually occur in small intimate groups, rotating between the three proposed stations, or as larger exhibitions accommodating 20–40 spectators. This flexible approach ensures engagement at different scales.
Reimagining elements of Straits Chinese furniture
The replica altar table set serves as the main display and storage area for the museum box objects. Tables are incorporated for displaying objects from the travelling museum box, creating additional zones that offer intimate touch points for art ambassadors to engage with visitors, sharing insights into the social histories of the displayed objects.
The blue and gold colours represent the space correspond to Baba House's laundry blue exterior and the gilded architectural features located in the Reception Hall and throughout the house.
